Everyone is called to increasing capability, but with limited time, how?
I believe my readers are going to be doing more things for the Lord in the coming years. And that will require them to be more faithful and strategic with their time.
One of the most common questions I get is, “Phil how does one do so much in so little time?”
Just for reference (not a boast), I am a husband, father of 4, have a full-time job, part-time pastor, wrote a book, and am in multiple leadership positions and businesses. I do all of them pretty well, and I feel that I give to Jesus his due in all these areas.
How do I do it?
Okay, I’m going to spill the secrets of how to maximize and multiply your time. It starts with thinking about time differently.
Thinking about time differently (Not all time is equal)
Here’s the truth–everyone has the same 24 hours a day. (Well, 16 if you remove sleep.)
Yet some people are able to do more, how?
The key is not the time itself, but the person using the time (obviously.)
To me, wise people multiply their time. In that, with the same amount of time, they can do more than a typical person.
In my experience, I think there are 3 time multipliers that once people get a hold of, they can really learn to maximize their time.
Here they are:
The Multiplier of Skills & Knowledge
The Multiplier of Sound Strategy
The Multiplier of God Miracles
This newsletter we are just going to cover the first one.
The rest of the weeks we’ll go over the other ones.
Get Skills & Knowledge to Multiply Your Time
I remember totally struggling one day to fix a broken appliance. I spent hours debugging it, breaking it apart, looking it up online. It was fruitless.
Then I finally gave up and called a technician. He comes over, looks at it once and goes “Oh you just need to X, Y, Z.”
30 minutes later, it was up and running again.
Wow. Talk about a time difference
Me - hours to do something and not do it well
Technician - 30 minutes and did it excellently.
What’s the difference? Skills and knowledge
When you have skills and knowledge your time is multiplied. What takes someone 3 hours could only take you 15 minutes. When people ask me “How does one do so much in so little time,” I also notice, they often don’t have a dedication to growing their skills and knowledge.
One of the things I’m privileged to do is cook (nearly) every meal for my family. People wonder - “how do you do that??” The answer is really simple - it’s because I’m good at it. Okay, not like world-class, but the practice of cooking is easy because I deliberately spent time learning the facets of cooking so that I’m not thinking hard when I cook. It comes easy.
To me, God loves skills and knowledge. When I read about Daniel and how he shaped Babylon, he was chosen specifically because of his skills and knowledge. He enabled him to win the heart of the king of Babylon quickly in order for him to do the work of God.
Want to multiply your time? Spend time growing your skills and knowledge.
